I’d reread the same line in this book a million times, or so it felt like, as I waited for Ace to return. He’d told me that he was going to find Falcone and put an end to all of this, but that was all I knew. Maybe it was best I didn’t know the details about what was supposed to go down tonight, but I couldn’t help but worry about him. I’d hoped that the solution we both wanted would be the one that would come about.

Those thoughts didn’t make my nerves any better, however.

Reading usually took my mind away from my reality, but I couldn’t seem to focus. It was why I’d reread the same line again before I closed the book and put it on my bedside table next to the lamp that was currently the only light in the room.

Would television help? Probably not because it still gave me the opportunity to think too much.

With a sigh, I snuggled deep into the covers and turned the lamp off. Forcing myself into darkness would probably do little to turn off my brain, but it was worth a shot.

I closed my eyes, and it took a while before I felt my body start to doze off. Before I could get into a deep sleep, I heard what I thought was the bedroom door quietly open. My eyes shot open and when I saw a light appear from around the open door, it confirmed my suspicions.

“Ace?” My question came out as more of a whisper, but it got the job done. I relaxed when he responded.

“I didn’t expect you to be awake. It’s almost two a.m.”

“There was no way I was going to be able to sleep with you out there doing who knows what.” I sat up in bed and turned on the lamp, illuminating the room once more. “Is he dead?”

I studied the way that Ace looked and knew that I had answered my own question. The dejection on his face painted a perfect picture. It was clear things hadn’t gone the way he’d planned but I still wanted to hear the words out of Ace’s mouth.

“We didn’t catch him. That slimy son of a bitch escaped and now who knows where he is. If he’s smart, which I doubt that he is, he will have gotten out of town quickly.” Ace walked over to my side of the bed and sat down on the edge. “I’m keeping my promise to you. He’s going to pay for all the pain that he put you through, if it’s the last thing that I do.”

“Well, I, for one, hope that it’s not the last thing that you do.”

That caused a small smirk to form on his lips. I couldn’t help but smile as well because it was because of me that his mood lightened even temporarily. And I felt more at ease because he was home safe.

“I’m going to take a shower. I want to wash this grime off me.
